Posted: 4 AprilIn my ongoing and likely futile effort to write a Steam review for every game in my library (#413 out of 572). It's time for Alpha Protocol.Veteran RPG developer Obsidian's first foray into a meaty RPG in their own IP, Alpha Protocol is a bit of a mess, but a brilliant mess all the same.Basically, it's a James Bond-esque espionage RPG, with perhaps just a hint of Austin Powers. It's silly and melodramatic and filled with betrayals and double crosses and all manner of nonsense that it takes very, very seriously: the fate of the world is at stake, after all!
It's raucous fun.Unfortunately it's still an Obsidian game, and they have their mixed reputation for a reason. Alpha Protocol is perhaps their most problematic game: it's riddled with bugs and glitches and the latter half of the game feels especially sparse, as it was likely rushed to release far before it was ready. Fortunately there are mods out there that help mitigate many of the issues people have with the game, but you're still going to want to be very careful and save often. Posted: 6 AprilBefore going into this game, I knew this game was some sort of a spiritual successor to the original Deus Ex and that made me want to play this game.
Alpha Protocol (EUR) PC Download for PC/Windows. Game description, information and PC download page.
I went into this game with a positive mindset. However, I can say this game does not provide an experience even close to the original Deus Ex. Horrendous and awkward Combat system, lackluster and very basic stealth system, poor writing, bad graphics, UI exclusively designed for consoles, tiny levels filled with corridors and loading screens, numerous bugs. Just to name a few of the concerns with the game. At every point in the game, I kept thinking to myself, maybe I just haven't reached the good parts yet, maybe the next chapter will be better, mayb.oops the game's done! I do not recommend playing this game whatsoever. Anything that it does, there are several other games that do it significantly better.
Even some aspects of Invisible War were done significantly better than alpha protocol.p.s. I forgot to mention the god awful boss fight encounters. So basically, you take cover, stare at the boss's head for 4 seconds, shoot, repeat this twenty more times. 'wow what a great boss fight encounter let's recycle it like at least 3 times!' I do not understand how the devs looked at any part of this game and were like, 'yeah this looks great!
